Angel Garcia is not happy with the news about the World Boxing Council ordering his son newly crowned WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs) to defend his title against WBC #1 mandatory challenger Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) on or before June of this year.
Angel feels that Danny should be able to move on to bigger fights that they have their eyes on. It’s unknown what big fight Angel is eying for Danny, but it obviously something that he must feel that is a bigger fight than a rematch with Khan.
Garcia did not impress with his 12 round decision win over Robert Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KOs) last Saturday night to win the vacant WBC welterweight title at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The judges scored the fight 116-112, 116-112 and 116-112.
The fact that Garcia was allowed to fight #6 WBC Guerrero for the WBC title instead of Khan or one of the higher ranked contenders like Shawn Porter was a controversial one, because the WBC skipped right over those fighters without giving them a chance to take the fight. In other words, Garcia was allowed to fight a lower ranked guy for the WBC title instead of someone higher ranked and arguably a better fighter than Guerrero, who had lost two out of his last four fights coming into the contest with Garcia.
“I don’t see nothing there,” Garcia said . “(If they fight) it’s going to be a repeat of the same thing again. Danny will knock Khan out. I’m not underestimating him but, I don’t want to get into the WBC politics. Danny is the champ. But I don’t see nothing happening there, in my opinion. I don’t think we’re even looking at that, honestly. Why would we fight Khan? There are bigger names out there right now. Khan had his time.
He made a lot of money in boxing. I don’t know why he stood around waiting for Mayweather to fight. It never happened. I don’t see (this fight) taking place.”

Garcia stopped Amir in the 4th round in 2012. However, Khan was dominating the fight going into the third round. It was a tough fight for Garcia until he was able to drop Khan in the 3rd. Regardless of the fact that Garcia beat Khan in the past, he’s still the No.1 contender in the WBC’s rankings and he was passed over by the WBC. He shouldn’t have been passed over in the first place, and now that the WBC is looking to give him a chance at fighting for the title afterwards, Angel is unhappy about it for some reason.
Does Angel want the WBC to just ignore their No.1 contender and let Danny Garcia fight whoever he pleases? It doesn’t make sense for them to do that. If Angel wants his son to be seen as a legitimate champion and not a paper champion due to the way he was allowed to fight a lower ranked guy for the belt, then he should be fine with letting his son fight Khan. At least if Garcia beats Amir again, he’ll have defeated the No.1 contender in the WBC’s rankings and he’ll look a little more legitimate in the eyes of the boxing public.
Angel says his son won’t be vacating the WBC title, because he feels this would be a sign of disrespect to the sport.
“We’re not trying to go on bad terms with anybody,” Garcia said of the WBC. “Were not trying to do that. Why would you be the champ and then vacate the belt? That’s disrespecting the boxing world. If we have to do it, then we have to do what we have to do. But I’m just saying I don’t see nothing there for me. (But) we’re not going to run from anybody. We’re not scared of (Amir Khan).”
If Angel and Danny aren’t going to run from Amir, then they need to let it go and accept that they’re going to need to fight Khan by June. If they can’t handle that, then they need to vacate the title and go look for Rod Salka to fight again or whoever else from the lightweight division.
We don’t even know if Amir is going to take the fight with Garcia. Khan seems a little conflicted about what he wants to do. He might end up facing IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook next in the summer because the money for that fight is a lot more than what he’d make in a rematch against Garcia.
